Bhubaneswar: Health insurance cover for MLAs and former MLAs of Odisha has been enhanced to Rs 10 lakh per year from Rs 5 lakh earlier.
The State government has been providing health insurance cover for MLAs and former MLAs of Odisha Assembly through nationalised insurance companies since 2012-13 financial year.
Also, in the current financial year, health insurance cover of up to Rs 5 lakh was provided to each member and former member and their spouses.
In view of the increase in health care expenses, MLAs and former MLAs had been repeatedly demanding for enhancing the health insurance coverage amount.
Accordingly, under instructions from the Speaker, a proposal was made to the State government for increasing the health insurance coverage amount to Rs 10 lakh from Rs 5 lakh.
Considering the aforementioned proposal, the State Government’s Finance Department has given its concurrence for enhancing the health insurance cover.
Following the concurrence of the Finance Department, Speaker Bikram Keshari Arukha has approved the renewal of health insurance cover to Rs 10 lakh per year for each member and former member.
Worth mentioning, 124 MLAs and their 88 spouses totalling 212 persons excluding members of the Council of Ministers will benefit from the enhanced health insurance cover.
In addition to this, 317 former MLAs and their 245 spouses totalling 562 persons will benefit from the enhanced health insurance cover.
