Bhubaneswar: In the wake of a heart-wrenching incident at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling has assured that every possible step is being taken to ensure the best medical care for student Jyotiprakash Biswal, who sustained serious burn injuries while trying to rescue fellow student Soumyashree Bisi.

Soumyashree, who had attempted self-immolation on the college premises last week in protest against alleged inaction over her harassment complaint, succumbed to her injuries late Monday night while undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Her death has sparked outrage and a demand for accountability from the college authorities.

Jyotiprakash, who rushed to save Soumyashree during the incident, is currently admitted to the Burn Unit of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

In a statement posted on X, Minister Mahaling said he had spoken with Jyotiprakash’s mother over the phone to check on his condition and offer emotional support.

“The government is committed to ensuring that Jyotiprakash receives the best possible treatment. Special instructions have been given to the medical team at SCB to provide focused care. I pray to the Almighty for his speedy recovery,” the minister wrote.

The tragic incident has led to widespread public concern, not just over student safety and institutional accountability, but also over the treatment of mental health and harassment-related complaints in educational institutions.
