Malkangiri: Incessant rain in Malkangiri district for the last few days has cut off several areas of the region from the mainland and neighbouring districts. While the submergence of the Kangurukonda bridge snapped road communication between Odisha and Andhra Pradesh on NH-326, communication with Chhattisgarh has been cut off as flood water is flowing over the Chalanguda bridge connecting Malkangari and neighbouring Chhattisgarh.
Most roads in the region are under water obstructing vehicular movement. The situation is similar at bridges at Poteru, MV-96, and Kanyashram. Hundreds of vehicles are seen stranded on both sides of the bridges as flood water is flowing over these bridges.
The heavy rainfall has also marooned the Kalimela area, cutting it off from the Malaya block.
Malkangiri received 354.8 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours forcing people to remain indoors. Locals fear that if the rains continue the water level in the Pangam river will rise rapidly cutting off road communication between Malkangari and Jeypore.
Meanwhile, a villager from Muduliguda under Rasabeda panchayat of the district was swept away by flood water and drowned to death. The incident occurred when the deceased, Ghenu Chalan (42), returned from his farmland on Tuesday. His body was recovered from a nearby canal, on Wednesday morning.
