Bhubaneswar: The regional office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) here has forecast heavy rain in five districts of Odisha on Saturday. According to the weather office, some regions of the state are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from today to July 12 under the influence of a cyclonic disturbance over the Bay of Bengal.
Moreover, a low-pressure area formed over Balasore in the state will cause heavy rainfall across the state during the next few days. Coastal Odisha will, however, experience light to moderate rainfall.
According to the IMD, Sundargarh, Devgarh, Keonjhar, Rayagada and Kandhamal are likely to receive 70 mm to 110 mm of rain today. A yellow alert has been issued for these districts for Saturday. Similarly, there is a possibility of heavy rain in north Odisha on Sunday, while the coastal and interior Odisha will experience light to moderate rain.
The low-pressure system active in the state extends through Balasore to the east-central Bay of Bengal. In addition, a cyclone is active in the lateral areas of West Bengal and North Odisha.
During the current monsoon season, 227.2 mm of rainfall has been recorded between June 1 and Saturday, which is 24 per cent less than the normal rainfall of 286.8 mm. During this period, Devgarh district recorded the maximum rainfall of 431.5 mm which is 55% more than the normal rainfall of 278.8 mm.
