Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall activity in the state due to a low-pressure formation over the northwest adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal off the south Odisha coast on Monday.
According to a press release by IMD, “A fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal around 19th July 2024.”
The press release further stated, “A low-pressure system has developed northwest of the west-central Bay of Bengal, just off the southern Odisha coast, extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, with a southwestward tilt at higher altitudes.”
The IMD has also forecasted the weather for the next five days following the low pressure.
The forecast is as follows:

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is very likely to occur in one or two places over the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, Nawarangpur, and Rayagada.
Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur in one or two places over the districts of Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Bolangir.
Thunderstorms with lightning are very likely at one or two places over the districts of north interior Odisha, Sonepur, Boudh, and coastal Odisha.

Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nawarangpur, Nuapada, and Bolangir.
Day 5 (Valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 19.07.24 to 0830 Hrs IST of 20.07.24): Yellow Warning (Be updated)
Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, and Malkangiri.
Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur in one or two places over the districts of Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal.
The IMD has also issued a warning for fishermen: “Under the influence of the above-mentioned low-pressure area, squally weather with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40 to 50 kmph, very likely over Northwest adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal off the south Odisha coast during 15th July to 16th July 2024.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea area off the south Odisha coast, Northwest adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal during 15th and 16th July, 2024.”
