Balasore: Subarnarekha River is flowing above the danger mark, putting thousands of acres of farmland and several villages at risk of flooding. The water level in the river at Rajghat near Jaleswar has risen to 10.20 meters and is expected to surpass the danger mark of 10.36 meters.
According to sources, heavy rainfall in the past few days has led to a surge in water levels in various rivers across the state. The situation is being closely monitored, with the administration on high alert.
In a related incident, the Jamkunda sluice gate at Baliapal block in Balasore district has been damaged due to the heavy rainfall, disrupting communication between Baliapal and Jamkunda. The road is currently submerged under ankle-deep water.
According to reports, over 1,000 hectares of farmland have been inundated, with crops worth lakhs of rupees damaged.
The Irrigation Department has initiated repair work, with sandbags being placed to temporarily restore the gate.
In Keonjhar district, 16 gates of the Anandapur barrage have been opened to release excess water from the Baitarani River. The river is flowing at 36.56 meters, above the danger mark of 37.44 meters.
The district administration has sounded an alert, with officials on standby to tackle any emergency. With the water level rising every hour, the district administration is closely monitoring the situation.
In another development, the water level at Akhuapada Barrage has risen to 17.02 meters, surpassing the danger mark of 17.83 meters.
