Bhubaneswar: Four persons, one each in Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Koraput and Malkangiri districts have lost their lives in the torrential showers in southern parts of Odisha. Two more persons, one each in Kandhamal and Kalahandi districts are missing.
Due to very heavy rain in different parts of the State especially in southern districts, flood and water logging situation was experienced in nine districts such as Rayagada, Nawarangpur, Koraput, Malkangiri, Kandhamal, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Sambalpur and Bolangir.
As many as 1035 villages under 45 Blocks and 5 ULBs were affected due to this spell of heavy rain and flood. Nearly 1.77 Lakh people were affected. About 16,400 people were evacuated in different districts to 99 shelters and free kitchens were opened to them.
"There is no substantial rain since Thursday. The situation in almost all affected districts has become normal. All evacuated persons have since returned to their home," a press note issued by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department stated. Most of the road communications have been restored and steps have been taken for repair the damaged portions of the roads, it added.
In Bolangir district, 35 persons of village Uttar Bahal under Puintala Block have been sheltered in relief camp and provided with cooked food through free kitchen. The assessment of damages to private (houses, livestock and poultry, crops, etc) as well as damage to public properties are in progress, the Department stated.
