Bhubaneswar: The primary responsibility of the police extends far beyond maintaining law and order because they play a vital role in safeguarding communities during times of crisis. As first responders, police officers spring into action at the onset of any disaster, whether natural or man-made. From earthquakes and floods to cyclones, they provide critical support and security to those affected, ensuring the well-being and safety of victims. Their swift response and selfless dedication are crucial in mitigating the impact of disasters, making them indispensable heroes in times of need.

Cyclone Dana hit Odisha’s coastal districts causing destruction in three districts. But amidst the chaos, the Odisha Police emerged as heroes, risking their lives to save countless others with unwavering compassion. Whether it’s rescuing stranded children, aiding elderly citizens, or supporting those with medical needs, they worked tirelessly in the face of disaster.

Their selfless dedication was on full display as they braved the cyclone’s wrath, putting the needs of others before their own. The numbers are staggering – over 300,000 people were evacuated, a testament to the police’s swift and effective response. Before, during, and after the landfall, their round-the-clock efforts helped mitigate the cyclone’s impact, providing critical support to those in need.

Under the guidance of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and the direct supervision of Director General of Police YB Khurania, Odisha Police proved that they are more than just law enforcers. They are guardians of the community. Their heroism serves as a shining example of the power of compassion and duty.

For instance, an elderly woman from Cuttack, stranded near Sankheswari temple in Puri due to cyclone Dana was swiftly rescued by local police after she dialled the toll-free number 112. She was safely shifted to a shelter.

There are several instances in which police were seen lending helping hands to everyone in need of assistance whether it’s a child, elderly or someone unwell because ensuring people’s safety and security is their paramount concern.

Thanks to men in uniform, even the most hesitant residents felt confident enough to leave their homes and seek safety in the cyclone shelters.

That’s not all. Police officers in Odisha went above and beyond their call of duty during Cyclone Dana. After ensuring the needy were safely sheltered, they spent the night alongside them to make them feel less frightened during the cyclone’s landfall.

Their tireless efforts in Basudevpur and Kendrapara were truly heroic, as they led rescue operations, evacuating vulnerable communities.
