Koraput: In a shocking incident, a 70-year-old man from Koraput district hid his life savings of approximately Rs 1.10 lakh and 11 grams of gold in his backyard.

After his demise, his family recovered Rs 32,000, but the remaining amount and gold are yet to be found.

According to sources, Sitaram Meleka a resident of Kelubadi village under Narayanpatna block in Koraput district, had accumulated wealth over years through farming and working as a daily labourer. He had secretly buried the treasure near a mango tree in his backyard.

Sitararam’s family consisted of three sons, a daughter, and his wife Sami. Sitararam had solemnised the marriages of his three sons and a daughter. He used to cultivate rice, maize, and paddy on his land for their survival. He also received an old-age pension, ensuring a comfortable life. He reportedly dug a pit near the mango tree in his backyard and hid his earnings and gold for future security, especially for his children’s well-being. He continued this practice for years.

Sitaram fell sick this morning and failed to wake up in the morning. Before passing away, Meleka informed his family about the hidden treasure, saying that he had kept some money and gold near the mango tree.

After performing his last rituals, his family members started searching for the treasure and found Rs 32,000 in new and old currency notes, including Rs 500, Rs 100, Rs 50, Rs 20, and Rs 10 notes. However, most of the notes were damaged due to moisture.

Till the last report came in, the deceased’s family was still searching for the remaining amount and gold.
