Bhubaneswar: After Union Minister of state for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan announced that a permanent bench of the Orissa High Court should be set up at Sambalpur, the State Assembly witnessed a debate over it on Tuesday.

Raising the issue during zero hour in the Assembly, the Leader of Opposition Narasingh Mishra demanded the Union Minister to withdraw his statement and said let the authorities decide the place for the setting up of a permanent bench of the High Court.

The Yashawant Sinha Committee constituted by the Central government has formulated certain guidelines and as per the guidelines, a permanent bench of the High Court can be established in Bolangir, Mishra added.

What is interesting is MLAs from different places in the Western Odisha demanded the HC bench at their respective localities.

“As per Yashawant Sinha Committee a place which is located 500 km away from HC will be considered for setting up a permanent bench. And, Jeypore of Koraput district is 600 km from Cuttack and it’s a scheduled area. Therefore, HC bench should be set up in Jeypore,” demanded Congress Chief Whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati.

Similarly, BJD MLA Raseswari Panigarhi said the HC bench should be set up at Sambalpur, her constituency.

“We have a long-standing demand that High Court bench should be in Sambalpur as it’s the heart of Western Odisha and besides, Sambalpur fulfills all the points as per the Yashawant Sinha Committee,” Panigrahi explained.

The lawyers of each district in Western Odisha have been demanding for setting up of a permanent bench of the High Court in their respective areas.

Another BJD MLA Dibya Shankar Mishra, who represents Kalahandi constituency, demanded that bench should be set up Bhawanipatna.
