Bhubaneswar: While the annual bird census is already underway in Odisha’s Chilika Lake, Bhitarkanika National Park and other venues where the avian guests flock together during winter, the annual survey kick-started today in Hirakud Dam area.
It reportedly started early morning as the winged guests normally throng their cozy nooks of the water bodies during these hours.
Sources said that 1,45,946 migratory birds had been to Hirakud Dam area in Sambalpur district of western Odisha region.
Reports also said that teams from the Forest Divisions of Sambalpur, Bargarh and Jharsuguda districts have been pressed into the census service in the premier water reservoir as well as its peripheral channels and water bodies.
Reports added that the OUAT students from Sambalpur district’s Chipilma unit have also been engaged in counting the migratory birds. All the teams have been equipped with boats and binoculars as well as other requisite tools for the annual enumeration of the migratory birds.
