Bhubaneswar: As heavy rains lash Odisha, water level in Hirakud Dam continues to rise in upper catchment areas. To release the seaon's first flood water, the gates of the dam will be opened on August 14 after 11 am, informed dam's chief engineer Sunil Kumar Naik.
As per reports, water level of Hirakud now stands at 615.34 ft against the water storage capacity of 630 ft.
As the flood water will enter, people have been warned people not to venture near river Mahanadi. The districts of Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Angul, Boudh, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Phulbani, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur and Puri are on alert.
Earlier, the dam authorities had issued an advisory stating people to remain alert and limit their activity near Mahandi river bed as gates might be opened at any time as soon as the water goes up the warning level. The siren near the spillway will sound alert for three times- first for 2 minutes followed by two times for 30 seconds each with an interval of 20 seconds in the middle.
