Bhubaneswar: As the peak flood phase continues in Mahanadi basin, the water level in Hirakud reservoir was 626.12 feet. At 8 pm today evening, the dam was receiving 5.80 lakh cusec water from the upstream and discharging 6.77 lakh cusec through 40 sluice gates.
Engineer-in-Chief of Water Resources Department, Bijay Mishra said, the situation is being monitored closely, as rainfall is expected over the next couple of days.
Even in the case of heavy rains due to the low pressure on August 19 and 20, the maximum water flow through Mundali will be 8.50 lakh cusec, he said. The situation is critical but under control, Special Relief Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Jena said.
Meanwhile there have been breaches in some parts of the Mahanadi basin leading to ingress of water into villages. There was a major breach in Kathakot in Kujang, and seveal other minor breaches have been reported over the last 24 hours.
