Cuttack: Around 550 House Surgeons of three government medical colleges in the State have threatened to cease work from tomorrow demanding a hike in stipend.
House Surgeons of SCB Medical College & Hospital, Cuttack, MKCG Medical College & Hospital, Berhampur, and VIMSAR, Burla will cease work from tomorrow if the government fails to increase their stipend or discuss the issue with their representatives latest by tonight.
“Last time the Odisha government raised stipend of House Surgeons was way back in 2017. The government had then promised that it will be increasing our stipend on completion of three years following a review. The three year term ended in April 2020,” informed Dr Deepak Kumar Samal, president, House Surgeon Association, SCB Medical College & Hospital briefing reporters here.
Dr Samal alleged that in the last four months they have appraised the government over their demands at different points of time but no steps have been taken by the government to fulfil their demands.
“On January 15 we served an ultimatum to the government stating that if it fails to a take a decision, from January 22 onwards all House Surgeons in the State would do their duty wearing black badges and if it still fails to fulfill our demands or talk to our representatives then from January 28 we will cease work,” said Dr Samal.
Till now no government official has talked to us so all 550 House Surgeons of three government medical colleges will cease work from tomorrow, he added.
Dr Samal, however, clarified that they would continue to do emergency and Covid duty despite the cease work.
He said that the Rs 20,000 stipend they getting in Odisha is much lower in comparison to that of other States.
Dr Samal further stated that during the last time the government had hiked their stipend they had demanded that their stipend should be 50% of the salary drawn by an Assistant Surgeon.
