Kalahandi: A sudden outbreak of diarrhoea at Tingopakan village under Jaipatna block in Kalahandi district left 21 ill and 5 critical. With 21 confirmed cases, the local healthcare system has swung into action to contain the spread of the disease and provide urgent medical attention to those affected.
According to sources, all the affected individuals have been admitted to Jaipatna Community Health Center, while the critical patients have been referred to the Kalahandi District Headquarters Hospital. A few villagers complained of diarrhoea on Sunday. However, they collected medicines from the nearby pharmacy but did not visit the hospital.
Upon being informed, Jaipatna Community Health Centre In-Charge Subhrajit Biswal visited the areas that witnessed the diarrhoea outbreak and made arrangements to take the victims to the hospital. The health team meanwhile collected water and stool samples of the patients for laboratory testing.
A 20-member medical team has been deployed to the village to sanitize the area, conduct health check-ups, and distribute medicines.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the outbreak may be due to contamination of water sources, as the villagers use the same pond for drinking and bathing, and animals also consume water from the same source.
The health condition of the admitted patients is stable, and some have already been discharged, said Biswal adding that awareness drives are being conducted in the village, and the situation is under control.
