Khordha: Two people have been arrested by the wildlife personnel for allegedly hunting migratory birds in the Chilika lake near Bhusandapur in Tangi forest range here.
12 carcasses of the large whistling teal were seized from the alleged hunters. The duo was nabbed during a regular patrolling in the Bhusandapur area.
Every year lakhs of birds descend onto the largest brackish water lake of Asia. Winged guests from far off places including Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, remote parts of Russia, Central and South-East Asia, Ladakh and Himalayas come to the Chilika lake in every winter for feeding and roosting. They start their homeward journey with the onset of summer.
