Bhubaneswar: Ace sprinter Dutee Chand has made startling revelations over the ongoing controversy surrounding her family and same-sex relationship. The Asian Games silver medallist has said she has been a dutiful daughter and financially supported her family always.
“My mother has been influenced by someone to make anti-Dutee statements that I was not helping my family,” she said.
Dutee blamed ‘some sections’ of the media for spreading canards ever since she revealed her relationship with a girl from her own village. Dutee said that while her parents have not yet raised any objection to her ‘same-sex’ relationship, her eldest sister has threatened to not only expel her from the family but also send her to jail.
“My eldest sister kind of wields power and authority in my family. But I am also an adult who has individual freedom. So, I decided to go ahead with this and make it public.” Dutee said that she was contemplating to take legal action against her sister.
On May 19, Chand, 23, in an interview with a national daily said that she was in a relationship with a woman from her village in eastern Odisha state, saying she got the courage to come out after India’s top court scrapped a colonial-era ban on gay sex last year.
“I have found someone who is my soulmate. I believe everyone should have the freedom to be with whoever they decide they want to be with,” Chand said in the interview.
