Berhampur: A first-year student of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Berhampur on Friday allegedly committed suicide in his hostel room at the permanent campus of the institute at Laudigaon under Golanthara police limits of Ganjam district.
The deceased student has been identified as Samaysatya Samar Murmu (18). Golanthra police have seized the body and have registered a case of unnatural death.
IIC of Golanthara police station Bibekananda Mohanty has informed that further investigation into the matter is underway.
According to reports, Samaysatya, son of Bajun Murmu of Chandipur Defence Colony joined IISER in the 2023-24 academic year.
A first-year student Samaysatya had joined IISER about 25 days back. He was staying in Men’s Hotel No.1 located at IISER’s permanent campus in Laudigaon. He was sharing the room with another classmate. His classmate had left the hostel room to attend classes.
At around 11.00 AM a sanitation worker had come to clean the hostel room. On opening the door he found Samaysatya’s body hanging from the ceiling fan in the room. The sanitation worker immediately informed the hostel manager.
Samaysatya was immediately rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here. However, he was declared dead by the doctors.
His body has been preserved at the hospital’s mortuary and his parents have been informed. They are on their way to Berhampur. Post-mortem of his body will be conducted tomorrow.
No suicide note has been seized from his hostel room, police said.
