Dhenkanal: In a massive raid over an illegal 'Ashram' in Dhenkanal today, the police and Child Welfare Committee have rescued 62 children. The ashram had illegally occupied land at 'Iringa Jharana' of Gada Palasuni village in Kankadahada block, and was operating from past 18 years.

The children rescued from the ashram have been handed over to the CWC and shifted to a shelter home. The raid was carried out under the supervision of Dhenkanal district administration.

The ahsram was operating from 30-acre plot of land inside Jarada forests. It was established in 1993 by Baba Raghunath Das. However, in 2002 after the demise of the Baba, the custody and management of the ashram came into the hands of Chabindra Sahu alias Chabi of Dharampur village in Talcher, said sources.

On July 2, a student of Std II - Somnath Nayak died in the ashram following which the district administration intiated inquiry and action. As many as 129 children from Std I to Std VII are students in this ashram, sources added.
