IMD Issues Red Alert For Heavy Rainfall In Odisha, Warns Of Extremely Heavy Rainfall In Several Dists

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Warning for parts of Odisha as a low-pressure area over southwest Gangetic West Bengal continues to impact weather conditions across the state. The system is likely to move slowly west-northwestward across Jharkhand and north Chhattisgarh over the next two days, bringing with it extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.

According to the IMD’s latest bulletin issued at 1:30 PM on July 6, the monsoon trough and an associated cyclonic circulation are fueling widespread rainfall activity in Odisha. The trough currently extends from Sri Ganganagar to northeast Bay of Bengal, passing through the center of the low-pressure area.

Warning Details – Next 2 Days

Day 1 – Valid Till 8:30 AM, July 8, 2025

Red Warning – Take Action: Extremely heavy rainfall (above 204.5 mm) very likely at one or two places in: Nuapada, Bargarh, Balangir. Accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds (30–40 kmph).

Orange Warning – Be Prepared: Heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorm and lightning likely in: Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sonepur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur

Yellow Warning – Be Aware: Heavy rain and thunderstorms in: Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri

Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty wind in: Puri, Khordha, Gajapati, Ganjam

Day 2 – Valid From 8:30 AM July 8 to 8:30 AM July 9

Orange Warning – Be Prepared: Heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds in: Bargarh, Nuapada, Balangir

Yellow Warning – Be Aware: Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms likely in: Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur

Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind (30–40 kmph) likely in: Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh

Additional Yellow Alert: Heavy rain at isolated places in: Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput, Malkangiri

Advisory to Public and Administration

The IMD has urged the general public, especially residents of the Red and Orange warning zones, to remain alert and avoid low-lying or flood-prone areas. District administrations have been asked to prepare for potential waterlogging, flash floods, and lightning-related incidents.

Farmers are also advised to take precautions for their crops and livestock. Authorities may consider temporary closures of schools in highly affected areas, depending on local conditions.
