Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has issued a Yellow Warning for the district of Malkangiri, forecasting thunderstorms and gusty winds for the next 24-48 hours, even as the Southwest Monsoon continues its retreat from the country.
According to the midday weather bulletin released on Wednesday, the line of withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon now passes through Karwar, Kalaburagi, Nizamabad, Kanker, Chandbali, and northeastwards. IMD has stated that conditions are favourable for the monsoon’s complete withdrawal from the remaining parts of the country within the next day. Simultaneously, the Northeast Monsoon rainfall activity is likely to commence over the southeastern peninsular region during the same period.
The weather activity over Odisha remains isolated. In the last 24 hours, light to moderate rain or thundershowers were recorded in one or two places over the districts of Rayagada and Malkangiri. Padia in Malkangiri district received the highest rainfall of 4 cm.
The plains of South Odisha saw a significant variation in temperature. Nayagarh recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 35.5°C, while Phulbani experienced the coolest minimum temperature of 18.5°C.
Yellow Warning for Malkangiri, Dry Spell Elsewhere
The forecast for the immediate future indicates continued isolated weather activity in the southern parts of the state.
Day 1 & 2 (Today & Tomorrow): A Yellow Warning (BE AWARE) is in effect for Malkangiri district, where a thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface winds reaching 30-40 kmph is very likely. Light to moderate rain is also expected in the district. For the rest of Odisha, dry weather is predicted to prevail.
Day 3 & 4: The weather is expected to become dry across the entire state with no warnings issued.
Day 5 & 6: Isolated rainfall activity is likely to return, shifting to the coastal districts and later to districts including Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, and Koraput.
The subsequent outlook for three days, from October 22 to October 25, indicates “no large change” in the weather pattern. The minimum temperature across the state is not expected to see any significant change over the next 6-7 days.
