Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued yellow and orange weather warnings across several districts of Odisha, forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms with lightning, and gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph. These weather conditions are expected to persist in different regions of the state till September 13.
According to the mid-day weather bulletin, a yellow warning has been issued for September 8 indicating heavy rain and thunderstorms with lightning accompanied by gusty surface winds likely at one or two places over the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Balangir. In addition, thunderstorms with lightning and similar wind speeds are expected at isolated places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Kandhamal, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagarh.
For September 9 and 11, the IMD has again issued yellow warnings predicting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms at one or two locations over Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, and Gajapati. Thunderstorm activity with lightning and gusty winds is also likely to affect districts such as Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, and Ganjam.
On September 12, the IMD has placed Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar under an orange warning, forecasting heavy to very heavy rain along with thunderstorms and gusty winds at one or two locations. A yellow warning for the same day predicts heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Balasore, and Bhadrak. Additionally, thunderstorms accompanied by gusty surface winds are likely to occur in Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Malkangiri, and Rayagada.
The IMD has also issued an orange warning for September 13, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places over the districts of Rayagada and Koraput. Furthermore, a yellow warning for heavy rain has been issued for Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Gajapati, and Ganjam on the same day.
The IMD has urged residents in the affected districts to remain alert and take necessary precautions to stay safe during the period of adverse weather.
