Bhubaneswar: India Meteorological Department (IMD) is set to complete 150 years of its establishment on January 15, 2025, marking a remarkable journey of scientific innovation and public service. To commemorate this milestone, IMD is organizing a series of activities throughout the year, starting from January 15, 2024.
One of the key events is the Meteorological Olympiad (Met-Olympiad), aimed at fostering enthusiasm and awareness about weather and climate sciences among young students. The Met-Olympiad is open to students of classes 8, 9, and 11 and will be conducted in two stages. The first stage is the State-Level Olympiad, involving an online test for all registered participants, followed by the National-Level Contest, which will bring state-level winners to New Delhi for a workshop and competition.
The Olympiad offers a unique opportunity for students to explore the fascinating field of meteorology, develop scientific curiosity, and showcase their knowledge. The state-level Olympiad features a 1-hour online examination comprising 60 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) on meteorology and related sciences. To help participants prepare, the official portal provides access to study materials, the syllabus, and sample questions.
IMD has announced attractive prizes for top performers, with winners receiving Rs 5000, Rs 3000, and Rs 2000 for first, second, and third prizes, respectively, at the state level. The top three winners from each state will be invited to New Delhi for a one-day workshop on January 14, 2025, followed by participation in the IMD 150th Foundation Day celebrations on January 15, 2025.
Travel and lodging expenses for these students and one accompanying teacher or guardian will be covered by IMD.
Key dates for the Olympiad include registration, which opens on December 1, 2024, and closes on December 10, 2024. The State-Level Exam will be held online on December 14-15, 2024, with results announced on December 17, 2024. The National-Level Contest and Workshop will take place on January 14, 2025, followed by the Foundation Day celebrations on January 15, 2025, where winners will be recognized.
