Bhubaneswar: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in 20 districts of Odisha till Friday under the influence of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday. All these places are likely to receive torrential rain (7-11 cm) accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
A bulletin issued by the IMD said that a low-pressure area has formed over the west-central Bay of Bengal and its adjoining northwest off north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over central Bay of Bengal.
The weather forecast says that the low pressure area is likely to trigger heavy rainfall at isolated places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati districts.
Thunderstorms with lightning may also occur at isolated places in Nuapada, Kandhamal, Kalahandi and Rayagada, the bulletin said.
The IMD has issued a yellow warning for heavy rain in 10 Odisha districts for today. These districts include Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore.
Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Jajpur on Thursday.
