IMD Predicts Heavy To Very Heavy Rain Across Odisha During Next 24 Hours

Bhubaneswar: Several parts of Odisha are very likely to experience heavy rain during the next 48 hours under the influence of a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), low-pressure area over the west-central and adjacent northwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression on Monday. Wind speed is currently 7 kmph and it is likely to increase and cross Puri coast by noon. As a result, heavy rains are expected in five districts, while a yellow alert has been issued for 12 districts today. The IMD has predicted heavy rain in coastal and interior Odisha later in the day.

The deep depression is moving towards north Odisha and West Bengal along the Odisha coast. It will cross the coast of Odisha and West Bengal between Puri and Digha by Monday noon.

According to the IMD, the impact will be more in the state on Monday and Tuesday. Heavy rain (70 mm to 200 mm) may occur in Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Cuttack and Dhenkanal today. Heavy to very heavy rain may occur in Ganjam, Koraput, Kandhamal, Bolangir, Bargarh, Boudh, Sonpur, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Sambalpur, Angul and Nayagarh districts. An orange warning has been issued for these districts.

Landslides are likely in hilly areas due to heavy rains, while kutcha roads and houses may be damaged. Villages and urban areas will be waterlogged. The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has warned fishermen not to venture into the sea. The concerned district administration has been asked to be prepared for any eventuality.

People in low-lying areas have been instructed to migrate to higher ground in case of heavy rainfall. The engineers in the field have been asked to keep a watchful eye on the river embankments. Municipal and municipal authorities have been instructed to take immediate remedial measures in case of drainage problems. The fire service department and ODRAF have been ordered to be executed.

It will rain on Tuesday too. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur. Heavy rain will also occur in Bargarh, Sonepur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Angul and Boudh. There is a possibility of heavy rain in some places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Sundargarh on Wednesday.
