Bhubaneswar: This year’s monsoon is expected to bring good news to Odisha, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting a normal southwest monsoon for 2025.
According to IMD’s forecast, the state will receive more than normal rainfall in June. However, coastal and north Odisha are expected to receive normal or slightly less rainfall in July and August. In contrast, south Odisha is forecasted to experience good rainfall in September, IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.
Several factors are contributing to this favourable monsoon prediction. The snow cover area in the northern hemisphere and Eurasia region was less from December to February, which is expected to positively impact the monsoon. Typically, excessive snow cover in the Eurasian region leads to less monsoon rainfall, but this year’s reduced snow cover may result in a more than normal monsoon, he added.
Furthermore, the current inactive state of El Nino in the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) near the equator is also conducive to normal rainfall during the monsoon season
