Jeypore: Heavy rain during the last 24 hours has given rise to flood-like situation in Odisha’s Koraput district. As the Kolab and Bori rivers are in spate, the district administration started evacuating residents of villages on the banks to safer places on Sunday evening.
According to IMD, the district received an average 50 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. While Boipariguda block recorded around 200 mm of rain, Jeypore block received 170 mm rainfall.
As per preliminary reports, paddy and sugarcane crop in over 5,000 acres in Kundra block have been submerged.
While several places in the district are under water, traffic between Kundura and Ghum via Digapur has been disrupted. Similarly, Kurlu and Biri rivers in Kundura block of Koraput district are also overflowing resulting in water-logging in Kundura and Kotpad blocks. In some places, houses have been damaged in the torrential rain. It is still raining in various places in Koraput district.
Meanwhile, the authorities have opened two gates of Jalaput dam and four gates of spillway dam after the water level reached danger mark. The water storage capacity of Jalaput dam is 2,750 feet and currently the water level in the dam has reached 2,749 feet.
With IMD forecasting more rain in the coming days, things might worsen further. The district administration has warned the people to remain indoors and the farmers have been advised not to go to their farmlands for the next few days.
