Balasore: India today successfully test-fired ATAGS (Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System) howitzer from Chandipur-based Proof and Experimental Establishment (PXE) for its user trial.
Sources said that it has been developed for the Indian Army by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and has greater than 95% indigenous content. Three rounds of cannons can be shot in 15 seconds against the enemy target.
DRDO had conducted the proof firing of armament for the 155/52 calibre ATAGS on 14 July 2016 and the test was successful.
While the ATAGS weighs 18 tons, the barrel length is 6975 mm, caliber 155 mm and effective firing range is 40-48 km.
Sources also claimed that India is the first ever nation in the world to have developed such an advanced and ultra-modern artillery system.
Reports further said that it was first publicly showcased at 68th Republic Day parade on 26 January 2017.
In August 2018, the Defence Acquisition Council reportedly approved the procurement of 150 ATAGS with an estimated cost of ₹3,364.78 crore (US$470 million).
While the gun underwent user trials in September 2020 and reportedly suffered a major setback, the gun has been cleared for further trials in November 2020 after an investigation.
