Two days ago, a group of 27 elephants crossed into the Gopalpur Reserve Forest on the outskirts of Nilgiri in Balasore district, with 26 of them returning to the Betnati Range in two groups on Thursday night.
The injured calf, which had strayed from the herd, crossed the Budhabalanga River and entered the Kshirapada Reserve Forest this morning. Locals alerted the Forest Department after spotting the calf with its tongue sticking out and bleeding from its mouth.
