Sundargarh: Internet services in Sundargarh town have been suspended for 24 hours with effect from 6:00 PM on Thursday, as authorities moved swiftly to contain escalating tension following an incident of violence allegedly triggered by rumours related to beef.
Sundargarh District Collector Subhankar Mohapatra informed that Section 163 has been imposed across the town to prevent further unrest, along with the temporary suspension of internet services to curb the spread of misinformation and maintain public order.
According to reports, tension flared up when an agitated group from the Regent Market area allegedly vandalised a meat shop near the Nari Kalyan Kendra. The mob also set a pickup van on fire and caused damage to a car and a scooter during the incident.
Police personnel and fire brigade teams rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information. The fire was brought under control, and the situation is currently under close monitoring by the district administration.
Authorities have appealed to residents to remain calm, avoid spreading rumours, and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure peace in the town.
