IPL Betting Racket Busted In Malkangiri, 4 Bookies Held

Malkangiri: The district police busted a racket which was involved in betting on Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket matches, on Saturday. Four persons have been arrested in this connection and Rs 9 lakh in cash was seized from their possession. They were identified as P Srinivas Rao alias Srinu, G Jagan Rao alias Jagan, Basanta Kumar Behera alias Runa and Bolanath Biswas alias Bhola.

All the four persons are residents of Malkangiri, the police said. During the raid, mobile phones used for betting, registers and receipts were seized. “The bookies used mobile apps to carry out betting. The bank accounts with money amounting to Rs 18 lakh, beloning to the bookies have been frozen. The four persons have been booked under Sections 294, 120(B), 34 of the IPC and Sections 4 & 5 of Prize Chits and Money circulations (Banning) Act,” a senior police official said.

“On October 15, Malkangiri Police received information that few bookies
are involved in IPL Betting. The bookies were fraudulently luring people in to
betting and have misappropriated large amount of money from public. Police
raided different locations of bookies during IPL Final match between CSK Vs
KKR and apprehended the bookies red handed. More bookies from Chhattisgarh are involved and will be arrested soon,” the official further said.
