In the wake of the hue and cry over Sahara chief Subrata Roy’s unexpected Odisha tour for holding business meeting despite being on parole granted by the Supreme Court, it has raised the eyebrows of the chit fund victims here in Odisha and has also raised a million dollar question on his allegedly ulterior motive of taking undue advantage of his interim parole span.
Talking to OMMCOM NEWS on Monday, Odisha Chit Fund Joint Forum Adviser and veteran journalist Rabi Das fumed, “ How come a person on parole be granted permission by the Commissionerate Police to hold meeting in a bid to expand his business policies for which he has been nailed and put behind the bars since 2014?”
Pointing fingers at the Commissionerate Police, Das flayed that the last hour clamping of Section 144 at the meeting venue (Cuttack Indoor Stadium) is just for the sake of a damage control mode in order to conceal their blunder.
On the other hand, Commissioner of Police Y B Khurania said, “We had intelligence reports that some chit fund victims were preparing to protest at Roy’s programme and there was a possibility of a law and order situation. Section 144 was imposed in the area and agents were asked to vacate the place. Roy’s entry in Cuttack was also restricted.”
Pertinent to note that on Sunday (May 29), Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate Police (CP) cancelled Sahara India chairman Subrata Roy’s scheduled meeting with the company’s field workers in Cuttack anticipating law and order problem.
Earlier on Sunday, the CP had asked Sahara chief Subrata Roy to produce his parole document granted by the Supreme Court.
“It is very unfortunate that I could not meet around 3000 Pariwar members in Cuttack. We had permission but at the last moment Section 144 has been imposed. Police administration took the right decision over the law and order problem. As law-abiding citizens, we should co-operate with the police for maintaining peace. I shall definitely request the Chit Fund Forum people to remember the truth that Sahara’s financial services neither was nor is in any chit fund business. As I am asked not to meet the media, I am deprived of meeting my media friends,” Subrata Roy said in a statement.
Subrata Roy reached Bhubaneswar on Sunday evening to a warm reception accorded at the Biju Patnaik Internation Airport.
Need to be mentioned, Subrata Roy is cooling his heels in Tihar jail since March 4, 2014 while the apex court in first week of May this year has granted four weeks parole to him to attend the funeral of his mother. The parole was set to expire on June 4.
Meanwhile, the court has reportedly extended the parole till July 14.
