Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has expressed deep concern to his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee over the treatment meted out to President Droupadi Murmu during her recent visit to the state for the International Santhal Conclave in Siliguri.
Majhi highlighted that India’s democratic ethos is rooted in mutual respect and dignity, where political differences should never overshadow personal or institutional honour. He described the incident—marked by last-minute changes to event arrangements, including venue shifts for the tribal community gathering—as unfortunate and inconsistent with constitutional values. The episode, occurring just before International Women’s Day, was particularly distressing given President Murmu’s identity as a respected tribal woman from the Santhal community.
The Odisha CM noted that the handling of the visit had hurt the sentiments of millions of Adivasis, backward classes, and Dalits nationwide. As a fellow Santhal himself, Majhi conveyed personal distress over the developments, emphasizing the community’s significant contributions to national development. He pointed out that West Bengal, renowned for its cultural heritage and civility, should uphold the highest standards in respecting democratic institutions and constitutional offices.
“This incident has not only hurt the sentiments of millions of Adivasis, backward classes and Dalits across the country, but has also cast an avoidable shadow on the image of West Bengal, a land known for its culture, civility and respect for democratic institutions,” the letter read.
Majhi urged Banerjee to reflect on the matter and convey regret to the President and the nation. Such a gesture, he argued, would reaffirm commitment to democratic norms and preserve the dignity of high offices.
The controversy stems from reported protocol lapses, including venue changes from Bidhannagar to Gossainpur in Bagdogra, low attendance, and absence of key state officials. President Murmu publicly expressed disappointment, prompting the Centre to seek explanations from the West Bengal government. The row has intensified political exchanges, with BJP leaders criticizing the TMC administration, while Banerjee has accused opponents of politicizing the issue.
