Balasore: The Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate’s (SDJM’s) Court here today allowed the police to take Baburam Dey, senior technical officer of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) employed at Interim Test Range (ITR), Chandipur on a four-day remand for further questioning.
Dey was arrested on Friday on charges of espionage. He allegedly leaked/shared/transmitted sensitive/secret information regarding missile test, etc. to one foreign agent of Pakistan for sexual as well as monetary gratification over WhatsApp.
The police had prayed the SDJM Court to take accused Dey on remand for five days. Dey’s police remand starts from today and will end on February
Police sources have revealed that they are probing into the financial angle, especially disproportionate assets of the accused.
Dey is a native of Bagpunji village of Sampatia panchayat under Jaleswar block of Balasore district and the local Tahasildar has been asked to report to district police about any such transactions such as land deals, etc. by Dey, the sources added.
The sources further said that the district police is taking help of Financial Investigation Unit (FIU) under the Union Finance Ministry to probe into Dey’s assets as he is an employee of the Central Government.
Balasore SP Sagarika Nath has informed that Dey is the only person who was detained and subsequently arrested so far.
No other person has been detained or arrested, Nath clarified.
