Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government today suspended Naib Sarpanch of J Dengapadar gram panchayat under Polasara block of Ganjam district Krishna Chandra Jena for flouting COVID-19 regulations and restrictions, informed Panchayati Raj & Drinking Water Minister Pratap Jena.
Naib Sarpanch Jena and ten others have been arrested for violating social distancing norms during a religious programme organized in Mardarajpur village of J Dengapadar gram panchayat, the Ganjam Collector and District Magistrate has informed in through a tweet.
The tweet adds that FIR has been lodged against Jena and the priest of the religious programme.
The Collector has further said in the tweet that report has been sent to the government for further action.
While Ganjam has turned out to be Achilles’ Heel for the State Government because of the district topping the chart with the highest number of COVID-19 cases and deaths caused by the killer virus, Jena had allegedly organized a large congregation of over 500 people for the installation ceremony of a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman at Mardarajpur village on July 6.
Organizing such congregations is in complete violation of COVID-19 guidelines and regulations.
Reportedly, a local youth who had objected to the holding of such large gatherings was thrashed by the organizers.
However, video footage of the congregation and temple installation ceremony went viral on social media which was reported by the mainstream media.
Reports in the mainstream media nudged the administration out of its slumber and forced it to take action against Jena and others.
