Bhubaneswar: The Jagannath Temple in Puri will remain closed for five hours on Wednesday as the Banakalagi ritual of Lord Jagannath and His siblings is performed.

According to a notification by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), devotees will be barred from the darshan of the sibling deities from 5 pm to 10 pm.

“On Wednesday, 3rd December 2025, Margashira Shukla Trayodashi tithi, the Banakalagi Niti of the Holy Deities will be performed. Therefore, after the completion of the Second Bhog Mandap offering, public darshan will remain temporarily suspended from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM,” the notice said..

During the ritual, fresh colors—including Hingula, Haritala, Kasturi, Keshar, and Kaintha glue—are applied to the idols. Following tradition, the Dutta Mohapatra and Khadiprasad Daitapati servitors perform the ceremony.

The temple’s garbhagriha, or sanctum sanctorum, remains closed during the ritual, and no outsiders are allowed inside.
