Jajpur ASI Caught Red-Handed Taking Rs 5,000 Bribe In Land Dispute Case

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Vigilance on Monday apprehended Nanda Kishore Das, Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police (ASI) of Jajpur Town Police Station, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹5,000 from a small betel shop owner in connection with a land dispute case.

According to Vigilance officials, the shop owner had earlier approached the Orissa High Court seeking demarcation of his land. After the court’s order, the competent authority carried out the demarcation. However, the neighbour with whom the dispute was ongoing allegedly demolished the boundary wall constructed after demarcation. The shop owner then lodged a complaint at Jajpur Town Police Station.

ASI Das, who was the Investigating Officer in the case, allegedly visited the disputed site and demanded a bribe of ₹10,000 from the complainant to “help” him in the matter. When the complainant expressed his inability to pay the amount, Das reportedly reduced his demand to ₹5,000 and warned him of consequences if he failed to comply.

Left with no choice, the shop owner approached Odisha Vigilance. Acting on the complaint, Vigilance sleuths laid a trap and caught ASI Das red-handed while accepting the bribe on Monday. The entire bribe money was recovered from his possession and seized.

Following the trap, simultaneous searches were launched at three locations linked to ASI Das to ascertain any assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

Cuttack Vigilance Police Station has registered a case (No. 34 dated 07.12.2025) under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, in connection with the incident. Further investigation is underway.
