Bhubaneswar: After a gap of 11 months, the Biraja-Agneswar Haat, a daily vegetable market, reopened at its original location near the Devi Biraja temple in Jajpur.
The market had been relocated to the Sant Madhav area on January 19, 2024, to facilitate the Biraja project work. However, this decision was met with resentment from farmers and traders, who demanded the market’s relocation after the change of government.
Market transactions resumed at the haat on Sunday morning, with two platoons of police providing security. However, a law and order situation arose between supporters and opponents of the haat and the Birja Parikrama project, resulting in several arrests.
Following two coordination meetings with traders, employees, and intellectuals, the district administration decided to reopen the haat. Jajpur Collector P Anvesha Reddy had earlier announced that the haat would be relocated to its original site, a decision made after consulting with all concerned parties and the district administration.
