Balasore: Residents of the Soro area in Odisha’s Balasore district continue to live under fear of a suspected Japanese encephalitis outbreak as four more inmates of Purubai Kanyashram were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) after their condition deteriorated on Monday night.
As per reports, four inmates of Purubai Kanyashram – Rakhi Santhara (7), Nandini Singh (15), Purnima Das (15), and Rakshi Singh (6), were being treated at the Soro Medical Center but were shifted to the DHH as fevers persisted.
Earlier on Monday, five students of the Kanyashram reportedly tested positive for the viral brain infection and shifted to the DHH along with two other inmates of the institution.
Blood samples of 26 inmates of the residential school were sent for testing last week and five samples were found to be positive.
Last Friday, three inmates of the Kanyashram suddenly fell sick and were admitted to a local health facility. While a Class X student from the Dahanimara area in NIlagiri died on Saturday, 24 students of the school suffered diarrhoea and severe headache and were admitted to Soro Hospital.
Doctors attending the ailing students at Soro Hospital have, however, ruled out the spread of Japanese encephalitis. They said that the students were suffering from some kind of viral infection and are being kept under observation.
