Bhubaneswar: Former Member of Parliament and wife of former Chief Minister of Odisha, Late Janaki Ballabh Patnaik, Jayanti Patnaik passed away here on Wednesday night. She was 90.
Patnaik fell unconscious and was rushed to a private hospital here, where she was declared dead.
Born in 1932, she was elected to the Lok Sabha, twice – in 1985 from Cuttack and in 1998 from Berhampur.
Patnaik was the first Chairperson of the National Women’s Commission. She was also the president of the All India Mahila Congress. Apart from being an active politician, and a women’s leader, Patnaik was also a noted litterateur.
People from all walks of life have condoled her death.
