Jockeys Of Malkangiri’s Swabhiman Anchal

Malkangiri: A video of around 10-12 tribal boys racing their horses on a stretch of under-construction road in Swabhiman Anchal of Malkangiri district has gone viral.

The equestrian skills of these boys aged between 8-12 years galloping on a stretch of under-construction road passing through hills raising dust behind as seen in the video shot on mobile phone camera can be a cause of envy among many a skilled jockey.

With schools remaining closed for the Covid pandemic these children are racing their horses for pleasure.

Once these horses were the only mode of transport to inaccessible villages in this hilly terrain of this remote region both for the purposes of travelling from one habitation to another and fetch essential commodities till this area once known as the ‘Cut-Off’ area of Malkangiri-the Maoist bastion came to be known as the Swabhiman Anchal with the inauguration of Gurupriya Setu by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on July 26 in 2018.

Thus 151 villages across the Balimela reservoir were connected with the rest of Malkangiri district while ushering in development and progress in the shape of roads, communication, modern transport, et al.
