Malkangiri: In the run-up for three-tier rural polls in Odisha this year, many new faces and professionals from varied fields have filed nominations. One among these candidates is Jayanti Buruda, a former journalist, who is contesting for the post of Zilla Parishad Member from Malkangiri Zone – 3.
The young woman wishes to see the people of her region prosper and the region develops holistically. I have entered the poll ring after seeing the lack the representation for our people and the state of affairs in my area,” said Buruda, who belongs to the Koya tribal community.
Buruda, a native of Serpalli panchayat in the district worked as a journalist for a vernacular news channel. She is contesting the panchayat elections as an independent candidate. “As I have experience as a journalist and know the area well, I hope to represent the people better. My experience will be effective in the development of the area,” she added.
Despite financial hurdles, limited resources and other impediments, Buruda completed her Post Graduation at Central University in Koraput and also ensured that her sisters got formal education. She is ninth among 11 siblings. Female literacy, lack of potable water and pucca roads are among many problems faced by the people in her village, she added.
The young woman is a popular face in the area but did not approach any political party for a ticket. “Apart from being known to each family as a journalist, I am an active social worker. I am confident that people will vote in my favour and help me in fulfilling my dreams for the region,” Buruda said.
