Kalahandi: A woman allegedly committed suicide after being raped by her brother-in-law at Jamchua village under Jaipatna police limits in Kalahandi district, on Monday night.
According to sources, the victim was staying alone at Tingapakhan after her husband left for neighbouring states to work as a migrant labourer. Taking advantage of the situation, the woman’s brother-in-law outraged her modesty on April 22 and threatened her not to disclose it to others.
The deceased woman has been residing at Jamchua village with her family for the last few days after the rape incident. Unable to bear the trauma following her rape, she committed suicide by consuming poison last night. Jaipatna police rushed to the spot and seized the body, said sources.
The victim’s family, meanwhile, filed a complaint seeking immediate action against the rape accused.
Local Samiti Sabhya member Pitambar Harijan said, “I reached the spot after I came to know about suicidal death. The deceased woman was staying with her family following the incident. Her brother-in-law had raped her in a forest and this has left her disturbed. She was supposed to go for a medical examination today. However, she committed suicide by consuming poison last night.”
