**Kandhamal: ** Kandhamal District Collector D Brunda has appealed to the government employees of the district to donate a day’s salary to the district Red Cross fund which would help in the treatment of conjoined twins.
The amount will be debited to Red Cross fund in Axis Bank account number 917010053822084, Phulbani. The raised fund will be used for treatment of craniophagus conjoint twins at AIIMS New Delhi.
Notably, when the parents of the twins- Bhuan Kanhar and Pushpanjali- approached the state government for financial assistance, the Chief Minister Relief Fund approved a financial assistance of Rs 1 crore for the surgery of the 2-year-old conjoined twins for their medical expenses. It is estimate to cost around Rs 2.5 crores, according to sources.
The case of conjoined twins has been shifted to AIIMS, New Delhi. The AIIMS has formed a 30-member team for pre-surgery assessment of the twins. The doctors will reportedly conduct surgery in three phases to separate the twins.
According to doctors, this is a very rare case occurring once in 2.5 million live births and it has a high mortality rate as well.
