Bhubaneswar: Though Bhubaneswar is ranked as one of the best smart cities in the country, it is pathetic to know that kangaroo courts are still held in some areas of the Odisha capital. One such incident was reported from Mancheswar Leprosy Colony in the city wherein a kangaroo court tied a young woman with a pole for the entire night and tortured her brutally for meeting her boyfriend.
According to the police, the victim had come to Kolni in Mancheswar Leprosy Colony to meet her boyfriend Shankar Mandal on Monday evening. As the boy’s family did not approve of this, a large number of women gathered and beat the young woman after tying her with a pole. The torture reportedly continued for the whole night.
On being informed, police arrived at the scene on Tuesday and rescued the victim. The woman is said to have sustained deep injuries on her limbs and neck.
The police have registered a case against the colony residents under Section 161 of CrPC, while the victim has been sent for medical examination. The police have launched a probe into the incident and are on the lookout for the culprits. Complaints have been lodged against five persons in connection with the kangaroo court incident.
