**Cuttack:** Niranjan Singh (45) of Samagudia village, who attempted self immolation on November 8 in front of the Collectorate in Kendrapada succumbed to the burn injuries while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital here on Saturday.
Notably, Niranjan Singh had been running from pillar to post for the last few months to acquire a house under the scheme of Indira Awas Yojana, and the job of ASHA worker for his wife, Ranjita Singh earlier held by his mother.
According to sources, he had been assured by the Collector for the same, but did not avail any of these facilities. Out of desperation, he attempted self-immolation in front of the Collector’s Office at 10 am when most of the Collectorate staff had gone to attend a meeting called by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at Mahakalpada. A couple of persons present at Collectorate tried to save Singh who suffered 70 per cent burns.
The dead body is now shifted to the native place where the villagers and the family members are protesting in front of Collector’s office. They are demanding ex-gratia amount of Rs 10 lakhs and a job to the next of kin. They are also demanding the arrest of the District Collector.
According to the reports, the District Collector has announced a compensation amount of Rs 10 thousands by the Red Cross Society.
