Berhampur: Ganjam district administration on Thursday clamped prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC in 100 mtr area around Khallikote police station.
The district administration’s move to impose prohibitory orders came following the pelting of stones and bottles at the police by villagers.
Villagers hurled stones and water bottles at the police while it was taking the accused persons involved in Wednesday’s pre-poll violence in Khallikote to court.
Police resorted to baton charging after the windshield of the police van was damaged and a few policemen sustained injuries in the stone pelting by the villagers.
Khallikote police today arrested eight persons in connection with the alleged pre-poll violence on Wednesday night at Srikrushnasaranpur village, in which a 43-year-old man was killed and seven others were injured.
The arrests came after Chief Electoral Officer, Nikunja Bihari Dhal directed the Ganjam Collector and SP to take immediate measures to stop any violence and bring peace in the region.
Ruling BJD and BJP supporters clashed over fixing of posters of a candidate at Srikrushnasaranpur village on Wednesday evening. Both sides used sharp weapons in the fight.
The deceased has been identified as Dilip Kumar Pahana (28), who was a resident of the village.
Pahana succumbed to injuries during treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
A large police contingent has been deployed in the village to control the situation.
