Bhubaneswar: In the aftermath of arrest of its party MLA by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday night from his Cuttack-city based residence in connection with the ongoing probe into the multi-crore chit fund scam in Odisha, ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) seems to be sandwiched between waging political war against the arrest or protecting the interest of the duped investors.

While the BJD dubs such arrests as ‘illegal’, ‘arbitrary’ and ‘politically motivated’ by its bête noire BJP at the Centre’s helms of affairs, BJP questions if the regional party satrap is with the chit fund scam accused or the millions of gullible public having fallen prey to the honey trap of chit fund fraudsters and their so-called messiahs of the party in power.

Addressing a press meet on Wednesday at party headquarters here, BJP MLA Pradeep Purohit questioned, “Will the Chief Minister, who always avers ‘law will take its own course’, support the duped 10 lakh investors or protect the looters of those innocent people’s chit fund money?

“Will the Chief Minister (BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik) pave path for law (CBI probe) taking its own course?,” further questioned the saffron party legislator.

On the contrary, BJD spokesperson Sasmit Patra countered, “Our hon’ble Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has always been with the chit fund duped investors and today also stands for them. But, here the question arises: “CBI stands for whose interest? While CBI was actually asked to look into the chit fund money trail, what action has been taken till date?”

“The swindled money of the investors should have been confiscated by now by the CBI. How far has the CBI progressed on that level? It, thus, evinces that CBI has done nothing for the chit fund beneficiaries who have been looted. Had the job been assigned to Crime Branch, much progress had been tangible by now,” the BJD spokesperson argued.

Arguing further, he put forth, “Earlier in the chit fund case those who were arrested and sent jail, it had been done only by the Crime Branch. Had the CBI made any arrest in the Artha Tatwa chit fund case? No. Had the Crime Branch been entrusted with the investigation, the duped investors would have been refunded with their duped amount till date.”

“CBI has somewhere neglected its main duty and has instead been used as political tool,” the BJD spokesperson quipped.
