Cuttack: The arrest of two girlfriends of notorious gangster Shakil has revealed the modus operandi of the gang which has raised questions over the security system at Choudwar Circle Jail.
Cuttack DCP Akhileshvar Singh informed that the two girls Nasarin Khan and Nikhat Nasim used to visit Shakil at the jail or talk with him over phone. They took instructions from him and passed it on to other members of the gang.
Father and two brothers of Shakil were also involved in the crime of extortion. In the recent case also, in which the two girls were arrested, the gangster had demanded the complainant to handover the extortion money to his family members.
Singh said that Shakil is lodged in the jail for over one-and-a-half-year. He is operating from inside the jail in an attempt to strengthen his organisation but the police have been successful in its effort to check the crime.
However, lapses in Choudwar Circle Jail have been a hurdle for the police as many prisoners are using mobile phones to organise crimes from jail. The jail authorities have been requested many times to keep a check on it as there is problem in the jail if a criminal is able to make video calls from there.
The DCP further informed that previously male members of Shakil’s gang used to visit him in the jail and execute the crime. After their arrest he started to take help of the girls, who were under the scanner of the police for last few months. After finding their involvement in the case, they were arrested and court forwarded.
Few other persons involved in the case are currently absconding and the police are in search of all the miscreants. Police are also analyzing the property in the name of Shakil.
It is worthwhile to mention that Nasarin and Nikhat were arrested on January 1 and 3 respectively based on a complaint by a city-based businessman Yogesh Agarwal. The duo was assisting Shakil to extort Rs 10 lakh from Yogesh.
