Bhubaneswar: As the shocking suicide of Kunduli ‘gangrape’ victim has ignited vehement protests by political parties, opposition BJP has not only demanded a CBI probe and given a 12-hour bandh call in undivided Koraput district on Wednesday, but also swung into instant action of gheraoing Naveen Niwas (residence of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik).

As the saffron party activists led by the BJP Mahila Morcha broke the police cordon at Master Canteen Square here, they entered into a scuffle with the posse of police personnel resulting in stone-pelting and lathicharge. The situation got aggravated at Sishu Bhawan Chhak.

Several police personnel along with a BJP worker were seen profusely bleeding due to the violent protest.

Scores of the BJP activists have been rounded up by the police.

On the other hand, Mahila Congress activists also had a tug of war with the police personnel when they tried to barge into the prohibited zone of Naveen Niwas protesting against the same issue and demanding justice to the Kunduli ‘gangrape’ victim.

Even many Mahila Congress protesters have also been apprehended by the police there.

In his media reactions, Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi said, “When they (BJP activists) were on their march, we first tried to stop their at Master Canteen Square, but they broke the barricade and moved ahead. When we tried to check them at Sishu Bhawan Chhak, some of their activists pelted stones on us following which some of our police personnel have sustained injuries. Then we dispersed them. Around 200 have been detained. We are keeping a watch on it. Normalcy is being restored. We are alert to avert anything untoward.”

“Three-four police personnel have been injured. We’ll look into the video footage and see what legal action can be taken,” the DCP stated.

Odisha BJP general secretary Bhrugu Baxipatra, who was also injured, burst, “BJP condemn it. Odisha Government has turned to be ‘gunda’ (hooligan). The way chaos rules the roost in Odisha, BJP will keep on intensifying its protest till this government is changed and till the kunduli gangrape victim is given justice.”

Former Congress MP of Nabarangpur Pradeep Majhi has been demanding a CBI probe and due justice to the minor victim girl since she was alive.

She on Monday afternoon took the drastic step of suicide as she had been complaining against injustice meted out to her by the police in the ‘gangrape’ allegedly by four men in uniform and carrying guns in October last year.

She along with her mother and kinsmen used to claim being gangraped allegedly by the four accused whom she could easily identify. But the HRPC ADG quoting medical report dismissed any rape attempt.

However, the Odisha Chief Minister has already ordered for a judicial probe and the gazette notification already issued much prior to the ‘gangrape’ victim’s suicide.
